What Mentoring Founders Taught Me About Progress — By Peesh Chopra

I’m Peesh Chopra, a startup mentor based in Singapore, and this lesson came from working with founders who were always busy but never truly moving forward.

One founder in particular worked nearly 14 hours a day. He attended every meeting, replied to every message, and always seemed exhausted. Yet month after month, nothing meaningful changed in his startup.

He Was Always Busy — And Always Stuck

Every mentoring session started the same way:
“This week was crazy. I was extremely busy.”

But when we looked closer:

  • User growth was flat

  • Revenue hadn’t moved

  • Product decisions kept looping

Busyness had replaced progress.

The Question That Changed Everything

During one session, I stopped him and asked:

“What is one thing that improved in your startup this week?”

He went silent.
He scrolled through his notes — meetings, tasks, calls — but no outcomes.

That was the moment he realized the truth.

Activity Had Become a Shield

Busyness felt safe. It protected him from making difficult decisions:

  • Cutting features

  • Saying no to distractions

  • Focusing on one uncomfortable priority

Once we stripped his week down to one real objective, everything changed.

Less Work, More Progress

Three weeks later:

  • He worked fewer hours

  • Had fewer meetings

  • Made one clear product decision

And for the first time, the business moved forward.

Why I’m Sharing This

Many founders exhaust themselves without ever making progress. Effort is visible. Progress is quiet.

As a startup mentor, I’ve learned that real movement comes from clarity, discipline, and the courage to do less — better.
